De blokhut links van de bareel was in 1875 het enige gebouw langs de Hovestraat. In 1886 was er nauwelijks bebouwing langs de "Hovensche straat" of "Hovensche galgweg". Op deze oudste foto van de Hovestraat zien we in de verte aan de linkerkant de enige woning, nu vervangen door het huis Hovestraat 37. Rechts op de voorgrond het café-restaurant van hovenier Jan De Laet, dat in 1885 gebouwd werd (in 2020 braakland huisnummer 134). Merk ook op hoe smal de doorgang is. Rechts op de achtergrond de huizen van de Doelveldstraat en de Sint-Antoniuskerk.
